AES Families,

This week we begin our iReady benchmark testing in both Reading and Math. We can wait to see how much our students have grown this year! The i-Ready Diagnostic is an adaptive assessment that adjusts its questions to suit your student’s needs. Each item a student sees is individualized based on their answer to the previous question. For example, a series of correct answers will result in slightly harder questions, while a series of incorrect answers will yield slightly easier questions. The purpose of this is not to give your student a score or grade, but instead to determine how best to support your student’s learning. You can help your child by encouraging they get a good night of rest each evening and a healthy breakfast each morning. Don’t forget we serve a FREE hot breakfast eah morning in the cafeteria beginning at 7:10am!

Do you know a child who will be 5 years old by August 15th? Please encourage them to attend our AES Resident Kindergarten Round-Up THIS FRIDAY, from 8am-2pm.

Individual Spring Picture forms will be coming home this week. Picture Day is April 18th. Only prepaid orders will be photographed. If you have a kindergartener who was not present the day of cap and gown pictures a few weeks ago, WE WILL be taking their cap and gown picture on April 18th.

Please make plans to join us for our annual Lunch with a Loved One picnic during your child’s lunchtime. Your child and their classmates will meet their families on the Soccer Field for a picnic-style lunch. You can bring a lunch for your child, order a sack lunch from the cafeteria for your child, or you can order a pizza that will be delivered to AES.

**Submit a form for EACH CHILD you have at AES. **Don’t forget to bring your blankets and chairs to enjoy your lunch.

ESSER Survey - Parents, please go to https://www.alcoaschools.net/ and fill out the ESSER survey that is on the main page of the district website. This probably looks familiar, because it has to be filled out twice annually. Thank you for taking the time to complete it. PLEASE complete this survey prior to January 31st!

This time of year, we tend to see an increase in student illness. Please keep your child at home if they are running a fever, have stomach issues, or have any other illness which could be contagious. Our policy is that the student must be fever-free and stomach symptom-free (without medicine) for 24 hours before returning to school. Also, when a student is sick, they MUST BE fever-free and/or vomit-free without medication (Tylenol or Ibuprofen) for 24 hours before returning to school. If your child leaves school because he/she is sick with fever and/or vomiting, they MUST stay home the entire following school day. They may return following this absence as long as they are fever-free/vomit-free for 24 hours. Please send a parent note or doctor's excuse explaining the reason for all student absences when your child returns to school.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out. We are here to help and our doors are always open!!

AES Families,

What an exciting time of year this is at Alcoa Elementary School!

Last week the AES teachers took a Mid Year Data Dive and looked at where we started the 22/23 school year and where we are now. All we can say is WOW!! Our students have made incredible gains!! The exciting part is that we are only halfway through this school year and there is so much more to come!!! This term is when we see many students take giant leaps in their learning. Let’s keep the positive growth going with coordinated efforts between home and school.

One of the best things you can do with your child is read with them each night. By taking the time to read with them you:
(1) provide a fluent model of what reading sounds like,
(2) allow them to see that you value the practice needed to grow as a reader,
(3) encourage them to continue practicing the strategies and skills learned at school, and
(4) (the best of all), you get to spend quality time with your child.

As always, if you ever have any questions or need to reach us, please don’t hesitate. Our doors are always open. Thank you for sharing your children with us at AES!!

A few upcoming dates:
🌪1/10 - Class/Club Group Photo Day
🌪1/16 - NO SCHOOL (MLK Day)
🌪1/30-2/17 - AES Annual Candy Fundraiser
January 3, 2023
AES Families,

We hope everyone had a great holiday, had time to relax, and enjoyed spending time with family and friends. We can’t wait to have your child back in the building this WEDNESDAY, January 4th!!

With the onset of approaching winter weather and flu season, please log into Skyward and make sure all your contact information is up to date. Please include an additional emergency contact we can call to pick up your child in the event we cannot reach you. If you are unable to log in Skyward or need help, please contact our front office (982-3120) or send a Dojo to your child’s teacher and we will get it updated in the system for you.

Please help us by ensuring your child has a winter coat (labeled with their name) so they can be comfortable during outside recess on cold days.

Unfortunately, with winter weather comes flu season. If your child is sick and has a fever or vomiting, they must be fever and vomit free for 24 hours before returning to school to prevent other students from getting sick. If your child goes home sick, it is required that they remain out of school the following day. We want to minimize the spread of sickness and keep AES students and teachers healthy. Please remember to send a note if your child has been out sick.

As always, it is a blessing to have the opportunity to share in your child’s life and education. Please feel free to contact us, or your child’s teacher if you have any questions or concerns. You are always welcome and your involvement and support are appreciated. Happy New Year!! Happy 2023!!!

AES Families,

This has been a fantastic week back following our Thanksgiving Break!! PreK was busy learning about their 5 senses, Kindergarten kicked off their farm unit, 1st grade was tackling the skill of estimation in math, and 2nd grade what blowing us away with their knowledge of Greek Mythology!!

Next week we start our winter iReady Benchmark assessments. These assessments allow us to see the growth being made and the hard work they are putting forth each day. Please make sure your child is at school and on time. Remember, they can get a hot breakfast starting at 7:10 am each morning.

Be sure to check the Lost & Found racks and bin if you are missing any items. You can check in the morning from 7:10-7:45 during drop-off. During the day you are welcome to check, just sign in at the front office first. All remaining items will be donated on 12/16.

They may return following this absence as long as they are fever free/vomit-free for 24 hours. Please send a parent note or doctor's excuse explaining the reason for all student absences when your child returns to school.

Thank you so much for the wonderful turnout we had at our first Parent Advisory Meeting of the year!  We shared our school goals, provided information about ways you can get involved at AES, and were able to respond to questions that were posed.  If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, our doors are always open and would love to hear from you.

Morning Drop-Off Please utilize Katie’s Garden and the soccer field side entry drop-off until 7:45am and leave the circle drop-off available for students who are in Ms. Katie’s, Ms. Ashley’s, and Ms. Lisa’s classes.  After 7:45, please make the dino circle and drop-off at the front office, as the cafeteria doors are shut and locked at 7:45am.

AES Yard Signs - AES yard signs are hot off the press and we are ready to see them popping up all over our community!!  We will be celebrating the success of our students a little differently this year.  Each classroom teacher will be able to recognize 3 students (1 respectful, 1 responsible, and 1 being their best) each semester.  Each specials teacher will be able to recognize 2 students (2 super stars) each semester.   As student names are submitted, Dr. Pendergraft and Dr. Williams will invite the students to be part of the AES Morning Show (our daily virtual announcements), capture a picture, and share with the parent on Dojo.  While we know the Yard Sign assemblies were fun and exciting, this slight change has been made with the safety and security of our students in mind.
